Student Advisory Council (SAC)

YOUR student voice is crucial for the success of this initiative.

 

The Philadelphia STEM Equity Collective was established to cultivate STEM equity, access, and inclusion in STEM career pathways for Philadelphia students who are traditionally underrepresented in STEM occupations, focusing on Black, Latinx and women.  YOUR student voice is crucial for the success of this initiative. Therefore, we invite you to apply to the Collective’s Student Advisory Council (SAC) if you want to be part of our success.

 

As a member of SAC,

  • You will be a leader by discussing and representing your views and those of your peers at Collective Workgroup Meetings, Steering Committee Meetings, and SAC meetings.

  • You will Brainstorm strategies and provide feedback on initiatives created by the Collective.

  • You will be part of the decision making alongside community leaders to drive change and benefit the underrepresented populations of Philadelphia.

  • You will meet with other student leaders across the community. The SAC meetings, developed by SAC members, provide opportunities for everyone to work together on mutually defined goals, participate in leadership skill-building activities, and meet industry leaders around Philadelphia.

 

What am I committing to as part of SAC?

  • Attending monthly SAC meetings (~2 hours/month)

  • Attending Steering Committee meetings and/or PSEC Workgroup meetings every other month to represent the student voice (~2 hours/month.

  •  Serving in the SAC for at least 12 months

  •  Serving as a voice for others providing honest and thoughtful feedback

  • Modeling our Guiding Principles

What can I get out of this opportunity?

  • Network with a group of diverse peers from all around the city that are interested in amplifying STEM opportunities for Philadelphia Students

  • Have a meaningful voice and role in the direction and activities of the Collective.

  • Develop leadership skills.

  • Participate in youth-planned and led activities, as well as other special activities

  • Earn community service hours.

  • Gain college application assistance and letters of recommendation.

How do I apply?

  • Go HERE and complete the Application Form by Friday, March 1st, 2024, by 5:00pm. You will need to upload a copy of your most recent grades.

  • A Parent/Guardian permission form must be completed and submitted by the parent/guardian by Friday, March 1st, 2024 by 5:00pm. Share this LINK for the permission form.

  • A Recommendation form needs to be completed and submitted by the recommender Friday, March 1st, 2024, by 5:00pm. Share this LINK for the recommendation form

  • Please note that late applications will NOT be accepted.

What is the Application Process timeline?

  • Application Form: 

    • Due in all its parts by Friday, March 1st, 2024. 

  • Applicant Notification:

    • Applicants will be notified if they are selected or not for an interview by Friday, March 8th, 2024.

    • If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by Betsy Payne via email to schedule a virtual interview; these will take place between Tuesday, March 12th and Tuesday, March 19th, 2024

    • All interviewees will be notified whether they have been selected to participate in the PSEC Student Advisory Council by Friday, March 22nd, 2024.​

  • Accepted Students:

    • If you are chosen to participate as a Council member, you will be required to complete the following forms and return to us by  Friday, April 5th, 2024.

      • PSEC Student Advisory Council Consent & Liability Form - This form includes a release from liability, a photo release consent, medical treatment authorization, and emergency contact.

      • Child Abuse Clearances and Background Check, including fingerprinting forms. The cost of the background check will be covered by PSEC. Your parent/Legal guardian will need to provide consent for you to complete the Clearance Process.

 

  • First meeting:

    • We will start our SAC year with our first meeting on Thursday, April 25that 4:30 to 6:00pm. Details to follow!
